Royal Dirkzwager in European weather service cooperation
As from September 28th Royal Dirkzwager will connect the Dutch, British and German weather service organisations to its new internet platform Ship2Report. This approach will allow efficient tracking of the positions and expected movements of seagoing vessels in the ‘Voluntary Observing Ships’ (VOS) project.
Weather Services such as the KNMI in the Netherlands rely on participating ships for weather observations. The ships perform their observations on a voluntary basis as ‘Voluntary Observing Ships’ and total approx. 4000 around the world. The initiative is also supported by the European organisation of meteorological services, Eumetnet.
The international monitoring of these ships’ positions has already, for many years, been performed in cooperation with the Dutch maritime information and service provider Royal Dirkzwager.
The use of the new internet platform Ship2Report allows KNMI to service the monitoring equipment on 20% more ships with the same crew. This development therefore represents increased efficiency for this organisation by allowing more effective planning of equipment maintenance. And by doing so, indirectly assisting the quality of the weather forecasts.
This cooperation is a good example of the innovative way in which Royal Dirkzwager is working together with its customers, both within and outside the maritime-logistics world.
