Interview with Trevor Hursthouse

Position

Group Development Director

What do you do?

Everything that needs doing but always making sure that the business is amongst the best in the sector and maintains its reputation for quality performance and customer satisfaction.

How did you get into this industry?

By following the succession route a privately owned business requires.

Goodmarriott & Hursthouse has been trading successfully since 1913 – what has been the secret of its success?

There is no secret.  Success requires commitment, hard work, innovation, initiative, integrity, attention to detail, first class customer service and always wanting to be better than the competition.  It isn’t “rocket science”!

What is the best thing about your job?

Winning the order – completing the job successfully and seeing the finished article, knowing that the business made a significant contribution to the outcome.

And the worst?

Delivering everything required but not getting paid.

What’s been the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you at work?

Going on record as saying that “fax machines will be a seven day wonder”.

What would you be doing if you weren’t doing this job?

Difficult to imagine, but something challenging, demanding and rewarding - perhaps a lawyer.

How have you found the transition from running your own privately owned business to being part of Imtech?

Challenging but stimulating and just occasionally, frustrating.  It’s a different world but it’s where the business needs to be.

In July are you due to hand over the reigns as MD to Darron Littlehales – are you looking forward to it?

Originally apprehensive but now “yes”.  He is the right person for the job and, with the support of our strong management team, the business is in good hands.

What’s your favourite tipple?

Good cask beer – regrettably, there isn’t much about.

What do you do to relax?

Currently, I don’t very often but Grandchildren are beginning to have an influence and I look forward to more time with them together with family and friends.  Owning and driving classic cars as well as shooting, fishing, golf, entertaining and being entertained are on the agenda.
