Imtech proves its green credentials with top industry award

Imtech Technical Services Ltd (ITSL), leading UK and Ireland mechanical and electrical engineering contractor, was awarded ‘Environmental Project of the Year’ recently (12 July) at a prestigious award ceremony in London.

This accolade was presented at the Construction News Awards 2011 for the Advanced Digestion work carried out by one of the company’s business units, Imtech Process, for its client, Dwr Cymru Welsh Water.

The £68 million Advanced Digestion schemes at Cardiff and Afan were completed six months early, within budget and achieved ROCs accreditation in November 2010.  A key challenge was to deliver a significant reduction in Welsh Water’s operational carbon footprint in support of its strategic direction statement and Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) – 25% reduction by 2015.  These two plants will deliver operational savings of over £7 million/year, produce approximately 40 GWh/year of renewable power and reduce DCWW’s operational carbon footprint by approximately 50,000 tonnes CO2/year (15% of DCWW’s total).

Commented Jim Steel, Chief Executive of ITSL:  “I am very proud that Imtech has been presented with this prestigious award.  Sustainability and environmental considerations form the cornerstone of our business and Imtech Process’ achievement reinforces this message.  This award recognises our diligence and continued work in developing and implementing ways of reducing the global carbon footprint - and getting the balance right.  We will continue to develop and implement sustainable solutions throughout the group.”
