Imtech part of Green Route at Europort exhibition
Demand for Diesel Electric systems increases
An electric revolution will be a reality in the next five years as there is an increasing level of environmental awareness in both the commercial shipping sector and in the yachting world, Imtech Marine & Offshore: “The electric ship will be an industry standard.” .
The Imtech Marine Group (IMG) has always played its role in contributing to a cleaner environment, carrying out a lot of research into wind and solar energy, as well as other alternative energy sources and it has pioneered Diesel Electric Propulsion systems.
“As technology improves these systems have become more efficient, making them a more attractive choice for owners and shipbuilders. But as well as the systems being a greener option, they now offer a considerable Return on Investment,” says Imtech. Efficiency and flexibility is in addition to the fact they are more environmentally friendly.
Stricter regulations
IMG has put a great deal of energy into how power systems can deliver more energy and better fuel efficiency. And now an improvement in battery technology means that systems are getting smaller, faster and lighter. “Demand for a cleaner solution has always been there but previously the technology was not there.” At the same time, owners and operators are facing more environmental rules and regulations, so there is also more demand for a Diesel Electric solution. Already the industry is seeing several harbours and marinas put noise limits in place and they are making every effort to minimise pollution. Imtech believes this trend will only continue.
Less pollution and less noise
An electric system cuts pollution levels and minimises noise but Diesel Electric systems also give design flexibility. A Diesel Electric system can be mounted in pretty much any location and connected by cables with the rest of ship. For commercial vessels, the engine room can be placed away from the cargo because the mechanical shaft does not have to be taken into account. In addition, if there is one power plant taking care of all the electric consumers onboard this is more cost-efficient. In addition, vessels can make fuel savings but they also have increased manoeuvrability. Improved performance is of course, fuelling the interest for electrical options. These vessels are much more flexible, smoother and have instantaneous power, says Imtech. The systems are also getting a lot smaller and this will only continue in the future.
Diesel Electric systems are already extensively used in the Navy, offshore and dredging sectors. “For them, it is not just about being greener, they also see that this offers a better Return on Investment.”
Meanwhile, IMG is also introducing its own green quality mark – the Blue Whale logo. This was chosen because a whale is symbiotic with nature and clean oceans. If these gracious and quiet creatures are to continue to exist, sustainability is vital and sustainable systems are the very essence of IMG.
