October 12 2009

Today the real work starts for us. For the most of the time, Raymond will stay in the factory, helped by Nelson (The Production Manager), he will dive into the whole production process. I will be working with Arafath (the General Manager) and do some visits outside the factory, to analyse the tires and the current specifications of the sole.

So we started of at Palmer Rubber, the current sole-supplier to find out about the whole process on how the soles are made now. Palmer Rubber gave us a lot of information and a tour through the factory, they make a lot of things out of rubber by Injection moulding and Compression moulding. The factory is 30 years old and and I find it all really interesting.

On our way back to the factory, we pass a lot of Informal Settlements (houses or sheds made by the people, who live in it with what ever they can find; wood, bricks or clay) it’s impressive to see the amount of it and be so close at it. Back at the factory after lunch we hand out all the sweets (liquorice) that we brought for everybody, they really like it and the plate we had is empty within a couple of minutes. In the afternoon we pick up some scrap-tires from a retailer to analyse them. So far I am quite exciting by all the information and help I got from everybody. For dinner we go to an Indian restaurant that Arafath picked out, where we have a very nice and some spicy meal. Lisa
