Imtech wins orders for sustainable technology 2012 Olympic Games, including Olympic Stadium

August 27 2009

Gouda, The Netherlands - Imtech (technical services provider in Europe) announces that it has won the order for the sustainable climate technology in the new stadium that is to be built for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Imtech has also been given the assignment for the sustainable technology for a new shopping centre, which will form the heart of Stratford City, a completely new district being developed in East London that will be integrated into the Olympic Park. The total value of the orders amounts to around 35 million euro. Besides this, Imtech is still in the running for other Olympic orders.

René van der Bruggen, CEO of Imtech: ‘The orders for the 2012 Olympic Games have been secured partly thanks to our knowledge and expertise in the area of sustainable energy technology and confirm our strong European position in the ‘energy & environment’ market. The orders compensate for the slow down experienced in the London property sector due to the economic recession.’

Olympic Stadium 2012: a new ecological standard
Preparations for the 2012 Olympic Games in London are in full swing. The ambition of the responsible Olympic Delivery Authority is to realise the most sustainable Games ever. A sustainable Olympic Park is being created in East London with the new Olympic Stadium as its central point, which will also host the opening and closing ceremonies. With this new stadium, a new ecological standard will be set for future Olympic Games. The stadium has capacity for 80,000 seats, of which 25,000 are permanent seats and 55,000 seats are in a temporary construction. After the end of the Games the stadium will be reduced in capacity and the temporary seats will be removed and reused. There are plans to subsequently integrate the Olympic stadium sustainably into the largest urban park that has been created in Europe in the last 150 years. Sustainability is the basis for the stadium architects, Peter Cook and HOK Sport. Imtech will provide the sustainable climate technology, which is not only extremely energy efficient, but also emits very little CO2. As part of the environment-friendly supply chain approach, Imtech will partly be using solutions prefabricated in North London, which will then be transported via the City Mill river to the building location. This will reduce the emission of environmentally harmful fine particles to a minimum.

Stratford City: sustainable gateway to the 2012 Olympic Games
Next door to the Olympic Park and under contract from the Australian developer Westfield, the new 1.3 million m2 Stratford City will be realised; the sustainable gateway to the 2012 Olympic Games. The heart of this new development will be formed by the new 150,000 m2 shopping centre Westfield Stratford City, with around 300 local, national and international shops in lifestyle, fashion and interiors in combination with countless facilities for restaurants and entertainment. Top class department stores such as John Lewis, Marks & Spencer and Waitrose will be opening large branches here. Imtech is responsible for the sustainable climate technology in the shopping centre, including energy saving technical solutions and an ecological approach on the basis of modular prefabrication. This approach will result in considerable reduction in the carbon footprint during the realisation phase.

Experience counts
The orders awarded to Imtech are partly due to their extensive knowledge of high-tech solutions in the areas of energy and environment. Imtech can also take pride in a large number of excellent references from recent times. For example, Imtech was involved as technology partner in the realisation of large stadiums such as the Emirates Stadium in London (home to Arsenal FC), the renovation of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin (used recently for the World Athletics Championships), the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen in Germany (home to FC Schalke 04) and the expansion of the Grolsch Arena in Enschede in The Netherlands (home to FC Twente). In London, Imtech was also responsible for sustainable technology solutions in the mega shopping centre Westfield West One in White City and the technological renovation of the flagship stores from amongst others the department stores Peter Jones and Fortnum & Mason.
