Imtech to equip new frigates of type 125 with HVAC systems

February 5 2009

Hamburg, 30/01/2009 – Imtech has been awarded the contract by the F125 work group for fitting out the F125 frigates with HVAC and NBC-protection systems. The F125 work group consists of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and the Lürssen shipyard. Within the scope of a contract worth more than 30 million eu-ros, Imtech is responsible for a package comprising the engineering, construc-tion, supply, assembly and commissioning.

The project covers four frigates scheduled for commissioning by 2017. The speci-fications for the new type F125 frigates are a clear indication of the changed de-ployment profile of the German Navy. In addition to the traditional range of duties, these frigates may also be deployed on peace missions of extended duration in international theatres of operation. The additional requirements the frigates must meet call for entirely new solutions in terms of engineering design. The HVAC systems made by Imtech are guaranteed to provide “intensive use” capabilities. For one thing, this means that vessels must be able to stay at sea for considera-bly longer periods without service; for another, the specifications of the HVAC systems must be designed to cope with extreme climatic conditions.

Imtech has acquired extensive experience in the construction and fitting out of naval vessels. Three frigates of the predecessor type F124 already carry Imtech systems. In addition, in the UK Imtech is currently involved in the construction of the two new Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers for the British Royal Navy. Imtech is also installing HVAC systems on a corvette of the Polish Navy.
