HIPPS

HIPPS Systems

Imtech Vonk designs, manufactures and tests complete skid mounted
High Integrity Pressure Protection Systems (HIPPS).

A HIPPS system is an extremely reliable system to protect against overpressure in process parts / piping. Imtech Vonk can supply HIPPS systems with a Safety Integrity Level up to SIL-4. An availability of 99.99% can be achieved.

HIPPS systems basically consists of

  • Sensor Element (Pressure transmitters)
  • Logic Solver (Voting system)
  • Final Elements (Shutdown valves)

The Sensor Elements determine the (over)pressure in the system.

The Logic solver switches of the source of high pressure based on the status of the inputs. It contains a voting system (eg. 1 out of 3) on which it decides if closing of valves should be performed. The Logic Solver performs the Instrumented Protective Functions according to the IEC61508. It is functioning independent of other Systems. Imtech Vonk designs and programs IPS systems for a wide range of brands.

Depending on the requirements for availability and SIL level the shutdown valves can be equipped with dual solenoids to achieve maximum reliability.

Applications

HIPPS can be used to protect piping and process parts against overpressure. When a gas line is reliable protected against overpressure, a lower pipe class can be used and therefore costs can be reduced. HIPPS prevents gas spill to the environment because of reducing the number of relief valves.

 Valve size

Depending on the pipe class a wide range of Shutdown valves can be chosen from. Imtech Vonk can supply systems with 10” to 48” valves.

Control System

The position of the Shutdown Valves and their status can be monitored by a control system. This can be done even with Foundation Fieldbus positioners. Imtech Vonk designs and programs various control systems for a wide range of brands.

Optional Flow Control System

Depending on the application the pre-assembled HIPPS Skid can be equipped with a Flow/Pressure Control System. The system will control the flow on a pre-set value. When the pressure rises the system can automatically switch to pressure control, which will reduce the number of shutdowns of the plant.
